With the departure of Reverend Peter Sweeney, St Joseph parish welcomed its second Black pastor, Reverend Samuel Craig. Father Chester Ball, SSJ, was our first Black pastor. Father Craig served from 1989 to 1991. Our church continued to grow the ministries that were in place like our Gospel Choir, children’s choir, and musicians under the direction of its Director, Mrs. Theresa Leeke. Our Religious Education Department continued to be strong with its classes in Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD), Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC), and Liturgy of the Word with Children under the leadership of its Director, Mrs. Virginia Brust. Father Craig was transferred in 1991 to Ascension Church in Bowie and Reverend Michael J. King became our sixth Archdiocesan priest.
